FORT WAYNE – Gov. Mitch Daniels met privately Thursday with three Concordia Lutheran High School students and their parents to ask their thoughts on the state’s new voucher program.
Spurred by the stories of his father’s lonely and sometimes dangerous seven-mile walks to a schoolhouse in the segregated South, Kevin P. Chavous is today announcing the release of his second book Voices of Determination: Children That Defy the Odds. The book captures the struggles, heartbreak and determination of 10 students who overcome the odds, graduated high school and whose lives are now on a path for success in ending generations of poverty. The young people featured were forced to navigate around the practical realities of today’s most relevant social issues including poverty and homelessness, physical and emotional abuse, immigration, sub-par health care and struggles with addiction.
From coast to coast, others are praising our reforms of public education. One national magazine wrote that Indiana has gone “from the backwaters of education reform in America to the front.” The Fordham Institute said “No one has been more successful in providing a comprehensive reform plan for a system that is failing America’s children.” And then there’s this, from even further away: the Daily Telegraph of London wrote that in education, “England would do well to follow Indiana’s lead.”
Changes in Louisiana’s teacher tenure law and how public schools are funded are among the proposals that may be pushed this year by Gov. Bobby Jindal or education groups, officials said.
